Safari Motorhomes is now a subsidiary of Monaco Corporation. It is the only motorhome Monaco produces with an aluminum body. Safari Motorhomes are built on a Magnum chassis and use rear mounted turbocharged diesel engines manufactured by Caterpillar and Cummins. They are equipped with 6 speed Allison World Transmissions. We began our motorhome experience with a Safari Sahara Edition with a length of 35'. It had a Cummins intercooled turbocharged diesel engine. The vehicle had a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 22,500 pounds. Tank capacities were: Diesel fuel:100 gallons, Fresh Water: 100 gallons, Gray Water: 55 gallons, Black Water: 55 gallons, Propane: 39.4 gallons (31.5 gallons at the 80% fill level). Power service is 50 amp backed up by a 6.4 KW propane generator and a 2.5 KW inverter running off of 4 coach batteries. The inverter powers all 120 volt lights in the coach, an electric outlet in the kitchen, the TV which also serves as the backup camera monitor, the 120 volt stereo system, VCR, the bedroom TV and the stand-alone ice maker. Leveling is through a 3-point hydraulic leveling system. Climate control is provided by two 13,500 BTU roof mounted Dometic Penguin Air Conditioners with heat strips and a 35,000 BTU propane furnace. The Magnum Chassis was designed specifically for the Safari Motorhome with 4 wheel disc brakes and rides on 22.5" wheels.
